ABOUT ME

I am an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker providing in person and telehealth consultation with Medicare rebates available with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.

Originally from New Zealand where I completed my Social Work training I have spent the last 15+ years working in Child & Adolescent Mental Health services with children and adolescents with severe and complex mental health needs across New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland.  I now work exclusively in private practice on the Sunshine Coast or online where I see a range of children and adolescents as well as adults with complex and developmental trauma, PTSD, depression and anxiety, complex grief and loss, personality disorders, relationship issues, pre and postnatal mental health, birth trauma, parenting adjustment, and attachment.

As an EMDR trained therapist (Eye Movement Desensitisation and reprocessing therapy) my practice framework when treating trauma or trauma related presentations is informed by the understanding that the nature of our current distress or symptoms is connected to unresolved experiences in the past.

I use an integrated practice framework including attachment models such as Circle of Security and the PACE model, trauma-informed models such as EMDR; Internal Family Systems and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and, cognitive models such as Schema Therapy, and others as indicated.

I utilise a relational approach meaning I work with you as a partner in the process in which we both seek to understand the difficulties that have brought you to seek support and from there explore opportunities for change.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a form of psychotherapy that was initially developed to help individuals process traumatic experiences.

It has since been expanded and adapted to address a broader range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and other distressing memories or experiences.

EMDR therapy utilises bilateral stimulation, which can involve eye movements, taps, or sounds, to stimulate both sides of the brain.

This bilateral stimulation helps the individual access and process traumatic or distressing memories or experiences in a structured and supported way.

The goal of EMDR therapy is to assist individuals in reprocessing traumatic or distressing memories so that they can integrate them into their overall life experiences without the same level of distress or negative impact.

Through a series of carefully structured phases, EMDR therapy enables clients to identify and address maladaptive beliefs, emotions, and sensations associated with the targeted memory.

The process typically involves the client recalling the traumatic memory or distressing event while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation.

As the therapy progresses, the intensity of the distress associated with the memory tends to decrease, allowing the individual to develop more adaptive coping skills, insights, and beliefs.
